Meet Our Dog Sophie

If you follow me on Facebook, you’ve seen this smiling face before.  This is Sophie our awesome Australian Border Collie Mix.

During the kids Spring Break, Ben was in Russia, so the kids and I rented a cabin around my parents ‘lake house’ to have a little spring break.  Apparently Spring had not sprung, and we were confined to the warmth of the cabin and occasionally taking a brisk walk/ride to my parent’s ‘lake house’ (lake house is a loosely used term – it’s a trailer on the lake :), but it has all the amenities).  On the first day, my dad saw this cute puppy running around, in the snow at 9 in the morning.  We saw it that afternoon and she came running up to us and let us rub her belly.  I wanted her right then.  But we made a make-shift leash from a rope and walked her around asking if anyone knew who she belonged to.

After about 45 minutes walking around, in the freezing cold, a guy drove up and said ‘hey, that’s my dog!: I was just about to go look for her”.  And he pulled over, we chatted for a bit, it turned out he found her on the side of the road the day before and was going to give her as a present to his nephew.

There was a couple of things, that weighed on my mind that night regarding our brief conversation with the guy: 1) the dog had been running around since 9 in the morning and he was just now looking for her (it was about 4 in the afternoon) – doesn’t sound like a good candidate for a dog owner 2) giving a dog as a gift is generally never a good idea.  So that night, I kept thinking about her and decided the next day I was going to find that guy and ask if I could buy her.

We found his trailer, and it turned out he had talked to his brother and they said no to the dog. So he asked if we wanted her.  I was beyond happy, even more than the kids, I gave him the cash that I had, which was only $30, in thanks for the dog food and the care that he had given her.  We immediately packed everything up, and headed to our Vet who checked her for a chip and checked her health.

While the Vet took care of Sophie we were off to PetSmart for all the necessities: crate, dog food, chew toys, dog bed, cute dog collar that sparkled, tag and treats. At the time we thought she might be part Pyrenees because of her fur and large paws so I went a little overboard on the size of the crate because I didn’t know what kind of dog she was just yet.

But the vet believed her to be a border collie-australian shepard mix which was fine by us, we really didn’t care, we fell in love with her as soon as we saw her.

Now, remember Ben was in Russia and he and I joke around quite a bit, so I had to send him a convincing email so that he’d know this was not a joke – so essentially I sent the above video in the email and said “if you check the bank account, I spent X dollars at the Vet and X dollars at PetSmart”….his response “YOU”VE GOT SOME EXPLAINING TO DO!”.  I just smiled at the email, I knew as soon as he met Sophie he’d love her.

I put one of Ben’s Military blankets in her crate to sleep with so  Sophie would know Ben when he got home.  When Ben came home, she went right up to him and started bouncing all around him like she knew him forever.  I was right, he loved her right away.

Purina recently contacted me, and it was then that I realized I haven’t shared Sophie’s story with you guys – shame on me!  Sophie has been a Purina puppy in our home from day one.  We learned with the dogs we’d had in our family before that high protein is a must (corn based foods just fatten the dogs up and cause health issues – same with humans) and Purina ProPlan is one of the dog foods that has the highest percentage of protein giving her a healthy weight (that along with daily walks giving me a healthy weight :)).

Purina sent us soft dog food which I had never used before: when I received it Sophie went nuts!  She could smell the contents and knew the package was for her.  She is now effectively beyond spoiled because of the soft dog food!  One day I served her breakfast and dinner with a mixture of dry and wet; when I didn’t do the same the next day, she sat down-looked at me- then looked at her bowl and back at me, without moving …like “this is it?”…and being the absurd doggy mind-reader that I am, I decide to try another can and she went nuts trying to get to the food!   I had to remind Sophie of her manners – with 2 small kids and a 45 pound dog, we taught her to sit and wait be told when it is ok to eat because I didn’t want her to knock over the kids when they fed her. She’s very complacent for good things :).

She also really liked the Bumi toy Purina sent – it was easy to throw, play tug-of-war and she actually flipped it around by herself too.

I love Sophie.

We are in the process of building a fence in our backyard so Sophie can run free, I can’t wait to see her run free – I just hope she doesn’t try to dig under the fence to get to our ground hogs…

Thanks Purina for taking such good care of our family members, the ingredients in the dog food are often better than what is in people food. :)  For more of Sophie feel free to follow me on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter!

Just today, I was shocked by my son. LilMan was crying in the car on our way to pick up Em fro daycare. He was crying because he missed Charlie (who was our Cocker Spaniel, who is now in heaven), and I reminded him that God sent Sophie to us and that Charlie is in heaven pain free. Sophie needed us, we needed Sophie and Charlie is happy.
When we got home, LilMan went outside an played with Sophie for 45 minutes while I made dinner. We all needed and adore her. :) – whew (tears)- we love Sophie. :)
      Thanks for commenting and sharing!
