Charlie has been with us for 10 years, his birthday is February 1, 2001. He is now “geriatric”, he has lost his eyesight over the the last couple of weeks, he’s gone pee-pee in the house 3 times. He wonders around the house aimless, bumping into walls, staring at walls, I can’t tell what he is thinking, what he feels and he can’t communicate it. He has made 4 loops around me while I type this paragraph. I know Charlie’s time is close.
I’ve had a total of 4 cats and 2 dogs, including Charlie, in the past 15 years so I know when it’s time and it never gets easier. The 4 cats disappeared because of animals (coyotes, bears, snakes), that was hard because I didn’t know for sure and never found them. Peanut, our Jack Russel, we lost to liver disease the month before LilMan was born. Charlie is our longest kept, almost 11 years. Where as the rest: Frenchie, Tigger, Frankie, Louie and Peanut didn’t make 6 years of age… Charlie has been with us with both kids. Charlie is our oldest member of our little family.

I’m going to call the vet again this week, because he has gotten worse since last week. The first week of November we took Charlie to the vet because I saw that Charlie wasn’t acting right; he would go off on his own and at times would shake so hard his teeth would rattle. The vet ran tests and found that his liver enzymes were slightly elevated and his white blood cell count was slightly elevated so they put him on liver medicine and antibiotics. Last week I took him in because he was looking thinner, wasn’t eating and peed in the house twice. Over the past few days it has gotten worse.
I’m at a loss, this sweet dog now has his head on my lap looking up at my fingers tapping with hopeful, sad eyes. I believe this week may be Charlie’s last, now my worry is how to tell the kids…
